I've been reading about 70 years and Blackbird is one of those rare nuggets of pure gold in a whole mountain of clay . It plays out like the blues, full of riffs and bass and gravel that spin themselves into a mirror of soul not ashamed to get down and dirty and come up dragging us into a light we refused to open our eyes to before. Don't let the stomp and shuffle and guffaws fool you into thinking it's not about you, you ain't gonna get off that easy. I was in Gadsden Alabama for about three months in 1958, and he's not telling any lies. It was my first experience with deep southern segregationist views. A great morality tale told by a masterful and powerful writer about a very unique character.

About this story

Who on earth would pay one hundred dollars for a single brick...
and a broken one at that?

I, the author, did.

And I don't regret it at all.

Why not?

Because that brick gives me hope.

And maybe it will inspire you, too...

that through courage and sacrifice...

we can make a better world for all people.

The Broken Brick I paid $10000 for it What is it Really Worth? edition by Will Bevis Politics Social Sciences eBooks

There is an old red brick, busted into two parts, in Will's shed. He has never told anyone about it - not even his wife - until now. But this old brick is there for a reason: it has a back story. In fact, it is a piece of history, and Will doesn't want it to ever be thrown away.

That was actually what prompted him to write this story: he was fearful that one day he would die, and his family would come to clean out his possessions only to discover the busted brick. And because no one knew the story BEHIND the brick, it would be tossed out as garbage.

I can't tell you the story of the brick: Will has already done that well enough on his own, and it is his story to tell. But I CAN tell you that he paid $100 for this broken brick some 20 years ago because he was so passionate about preserving it and the story it had to tell. And now he is willing to pass that torch along - quite possibly to you. (So read the book to learn why and how if you have an interest.)

I will also tell you that Will admits he might have been "taken" with the whole story about the brick and paid way too much for it. But he finally says if he was, he doesn't care.

Will, I just want to say this to you about that: Perhaps you were "taken". There is no way to ever know one way or another. However, even if you were misled and this brick was not used and broken in the way you were led to believe it was, we both know there was AT LEAST ONE other brick SOMEWHERE that was damaged this way. That just makes sense. You saw the You Tube video you advised us to watch. You saw what was happening and how much stuff was being thrown at that time.

So whether your brick is in fact the actual piece of history you believe it to be or not (which again cannot be proven or disproved), it still REPRESENTS that history and as such should be preserved if you feel that strongly about it.

Personally, I think you make a good case. This was a touching story, and everyone should remember. And I say this as a white person. I have never understood why skin color should make a difference. I didn't get that as a kid, and I don't get that today as a grandmother.

One more thing though. You really should tell your wife about the brick. I don't care if you tell her about the price tag or not, but you really need to tell her the story behind the brick. And tell your children and any grandchildren as well. If we only hide the story in a shed and don't really talk about it and try to do a better job, then it really doesn't matter whether you keep the brick or not. If you won't talk about it and work to make it better with your family and friends, then maybe you should just throw the brick away after all. Maybe you didn't learn the lesson it had to teach, so what is the point of preserving it?

The Broken Brick I paid $10000 for it What is it Really Worth? edition by Will Bevis Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

I had no idea when I clicked on this little book what would possess someone to buy such an expensive brick. I had no idea that I would keep reading when I momentarily thought it might be religious in nature. I had no idea how the words, written so simply, so smoothly, would move me, for many different reasons, across the pages. And I absolutely had no idea what a huge impact this little book would make on me. That brick is truly worth far more than was ever paid for it.
Well worth the price. I was raised in a racist household. I hated it. I never believed the crud that I was forced to listen to. I'm thankful for that. I taught my children to be open minded and most importantly, to think for themselves. That old brick, is a great piece of history, that will always be with us. We've all moved forward in time, but some people will always be rascist, bigoted, small minded so and so's. I hope you've found someone who will treasure that old brick. Yep, I'd recommend this story.
